ABSTRACT
Ecosystem services (ES) are essential for survival of society and contribute to human well-being, employment and the functioning of many economic sectors. The aim of the article was to evaluate monetary and non-monetary methods of ES evaluation. It is a theoretical and methodological study based on a synthesis of the most important experiences and methodologies used within ES evaluation. Research studies show that the evaluation of goods and services provided by ecosystems is increasingly used in spatial planning, ecosystem management, creation of strategic documents, assessment of synergies and trade-offs from relations between individual ES. Future research within ES valuation should benefit from close cooperation of social sciences and natural sciences, which have the prospect of discovering new perspectives and approaches to ES assessment, taking into account the importance of their preservation for future generations.
